Training & Career Development
Family practice and internal medicine physicians who desire a certificate of added
qualifications in geriatric medicine can apply for a one-year geriatric medicine
fellowship. A geriatric psychiatry fellowship is also available at UAB. A palliative
care fellowship is available for physicians who want to obtain credentials in end-of-life
care.
Long-term (generally one year or longer) research training is available through:
- The Clinical and Behavioral Gerontology Research Training Program (CBGRTP).
- The Southeast Center for Excellence in Geriatric Medicine (SCEGM).
- The Gerontology Education Program (GEP).
Pre- and postdoctoral trainees committed to research involving interactions with
human subjects are invited to apply for mentored research training experiences through
the Clinical and Behavioral Gerontology Research Training Program. Predoctoral UAB
students can apply for a scholarship to support a mentored research experience in
aging through the Gerontology Education Program. GEP students also pursue community-based,
service-oriented experiences.
Physicians who are pursuing relevant postdoctoral training or who are early career
faculty members committed to geriatrics as an academic career may apply for support
through the Southeast Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine, either to pursue
career development activities related to research or as a clinician-educator.
The Geriatric Education Center (GEC) provides continuing interdisciplinary educational
programs for practitioners and faculty members.
Short-term experiences can be arranged for pre- and postdoctoral students, faculty
members, or practitioners who are interested in research, education, or service
careers related to aging.
