Patient Care Programs

Multiple UAB clinical departments including medicine, neurology, psychiatry, opthalmology, pathology, nutrition sciences, and surgery.

Patient care programs meeting the needs of older adults are available throughout the UAB Health System. This website highlights a few of those specifically designed to meet the needs of older adults or their family members.

The Division of Geriatric Psychiatry offers outpatient and inpatient programs that address mental health issues of older adults, including treatments for depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems associated with memory disorders.

The Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care offers primary care and specialty programs for older adults at the William Clifford and Margaret Spain McDonald Clinic. Patient care programs include the Geriatric Clinic, the Heart Failure Clinic, and the Camellia Medical Group. In addition, the Palliative Care Center offers palliative care and supportive care programs at the McDonald Clinic and a palliative care unit at UAB University Hospital. Other programs are offered at the Kirklin Clinic including the UAB continence program.

Other UAB patient care programs serving the needs of older adults include the Driving Assessment Clinic, Low Vision Program, Memory Disorders Clinic, Osteoporosis Clinic, and the Parkinson's Disease Clinic.

Geriatric programs supported by Center for Aging faculty at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC) include the Continence Clinic, a Mobility and Fall Prevention Clinic, a Geriatric Assessment Clinic, geriatric consults, home-based primary care, and palliative care (Safe Harbor).

UAB faculty provide medical directorship for other community-based programs including hospice programs and the United Mine Workers' Funds Geriatric Care Management Program.
