Residency Education in Geriatric Medicine

Ambulatory Care Block Months

Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine

Purpose:
For resident physicians in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine to gain experience in the provision of appropriate medical care to geriatric patients in a variety of ambulatory settings, both primary care and subspecialty clinics as well as in the patient's home including assisted living settings and nursing home.

Description:
Attend clinical activities on an individualized schedule selected from the following:

  • VA Geriatric Assessment
  • McDonald Senior Health Clinic
  • Fairhaven Retirement Center
  • UAB Memory Clinic
  • UAB Neurology Clinic
  • UAB and/or VA Continence Clinics
  • Geriatric Congestive Heart Failure Clinic
  • Home Visits with VA Home-Based Primary Care Team
  • Rheumatology Clinics
  • Palliative Care Clinic
  • VA Mobility Assessment/Falls Clinic

Attend conferences as scheduled:

  • Geriatric Assessment Clinic pre-conference - Mondays at 8 AM
  • Geriatric Clinical Case Conference - first Tuesdays 12 noon
  • Geriatric Journal Club - third Tuesdays 12 noon
  • Geriatric Noon Conference - Thursdays at 12 noon
  • Geriatric Didactic Conferences - Fridays at 1:30 pm
  • Professors Rounds - Fridays at 2:30 pm
