Conferences & Retreats

Sponsors:
Center for Aging, Birmingham/Atlanta VA Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center, Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine

Summary:
A weekly, interdisciplinary, scientific seminar is held each Friday at noon from September through June of each year. The Seminar Series disseminates information about a broad range of aging research topics, provides internal and external presenters an opportunity to receive feedback on their research, fosters interdisciplinary collaborations among investigators at UAB, and is a venue in which potential faculty recruits can present their aging research. Seminars represent the fields of biology, neuroscience, geriatrics, palliative care, public policy, translational research, and behavioral and social sciences. These seminars are followed by a Data Management and Analysis seminar one time per month.

A Geriatric Medicine Clinical Conference is also offered each Thursday at noon from September through June of each year. This weekly, interdisciplinary conference focuses on practical issues relevant to the interdisciplinary health care needs of older adults. It provides the latest in evidence-based care for conditions common in geriatric care.

Interdisciplinary scientific conferences and retreats are sponsored or co-sponsored by the Center for Aging to foster new interdisciplinary research, educational, and service initiatives. A Basic Biology of Aging retreat is conducted approximately every other year. Topical conferences on mobility, genito-urinary disorders, and caregiving have been held in the last several years. A conference related to the impact of Information Technology and Quality of Life for Older Adults is being planned for early in 2007.

Opportunities for faculty involvement:
Faculty may receive continuing education credit for attending the weekly scientific seminar series and clinical conferences and will be exposed to outstanding local and national scientists and practitioners. Junior and senior faculty are invited to present for these interdisciplinary programs, and can benefit from the feedback they receive from the interdisciplinary audience that attends.
