Education Programs
The Center for Aging offers AgeWell.com as a website specifically designed for members
in the community who want useful and practical information on all aspects of aging.
Community Outreach activities such as the Alzheimer Family Program, New Horizons
at UAB, and Pre-Retirement Counseling Programs, and a Speakers’ Bureau provide other
ways for the Center for Aging to share useful information with those that need it.
UAB students may pursue an undergraduate minor or a graduate certificate in gerontology
through the Gerontology Education Program. Medical students may participate in the
Geriatric Student Interest Group, summer research training experiences, or one-week
electives in Geriatrics. Internal medicine, family practice, and other resident
physicians participate in Geriatric Medicine Block Month Rotations. One-year, post-doctoral
clinical fellowships in Geriatric Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Palliative
Care are available for physicians who want to obtain certification in these areas.
Interdisciplinary, continuing education programs for community-based practitioners
and faculty members are sponsored in collaboration with the Geriatric Education
Center, the UAB Division of Continuing Medical Education, the Birmingham/Atlanta
VA Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), the Southeast Center
of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine (SCEGM), and the Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation.
The continuing education programs include the Alabama Practice-Based CME Program,
with course offerings available on-line, by mail, email, or FAX. From September
through May of each year, weekly Geriatric Clinical Conferences, topical journal
clubs on Mobility, Genito-Urinary Disorders, Palliative Care, and General Geriatrics,
Geriatric Case Conferences, and Scientific Seminars are offered.
Regular educational programs are supplemented by topic-specific interdisciplinary
retreats, conferences, and co-sponsored conferences. The Center for Aging Annual
Meeting provides an opportunity for all faculty members and the community to learn
about the scope of research being pursued at UAB and features a nationally prominent
gerontologist as the keynote speaker.
Career development activities including research training programs are offered through
the Clinical and Behavioral Gerontology Research Training Program and the Southeast
Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine (SCEGM). The SCEGM also provides support
for physicians to pursue careers as clinician educators.
