Community Resources
Community outreach activities of the Center for Aging include AgeWell.com, a
web page designed to provide answers to important questions that have been asked
by friends and family members related to aging and geriatrics.
The Alzheimer Family Program provides telephone counseling, information, support
groups, and referrals for family members caring for loved ones with memory problems
associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
New Horizons at UAB is offered as a learning program designed to address the interests
of older adults in the community.
The Center for Aging newsletter, Insight on Aging, is published twice per
year to provide information about new research, education, and service programs
related to aging at UAB.
The Center for Aging offers a Speakers’ Bureau and Pre-Retirement Counseling Seminars.
The Community Advisory Committee, made up primarily of representatives of community-based
organizations that serve the needs of older adults in the community, meets with
Center for Aging leadership twice per year to give feedback on new programs.
Community leaders make up a Board of Counselors that provides leadership for Center
for Aging Community Outreach and Development programs. The Board of Counselors sponsors
an annual reception in recognition of community supporters and contributors to the
Center for Aging. An Annual Campaign provides giving opportunities to those who
support the vision of the Center for Aging – adding life to years.
The Charles A. McCallum Award is given annually to persons in the community that
have demonstrated leadership and service on behalf of the UAB Center for Aging.
The Robert P. Bynum Award is given annually to a person age 75 years or older who
remains involved in activities that enhance the health and well being of other older
adults. The New Horizons Award is given annually to a not-for-profit organization
demonstrating a commitment to such a goal. Nominations for the Bynum and the New
Horizons Awards are accepted until June 30 of each year, with award announcements
made during the Annual Board of Counselors Reception.
