Palliative Care Fellowship

Sponsors:
ABHPM and the Hospice Foundation of America

Purpose:
The Palliative Care Fellowship Program at UAB enrolled its first graduate in training in July of 2000 and has been a leader in the education of physicians seeking advance training in Palliative Medicine since that time. Most graduates of the program are now practicing palliative medicine on a full time basis in Birmingham and other parts of the country. To date the program has a 100% success rate in board certification of its graduates through the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (ABHPM).

Summary:
The program offers one, two, or three year experiences with a broad curriculum and educational sites including home hospice, ambulatory Supportive and Palliative Care clinics, HIV/AIDS treatment clinics, inpatient palliative care units at UAB and Birmingham VA Medical Center, etc. The fellowship program received voluntary accreditation through ABHPM in 2006 and will be welcoming new fellows in July of 2006 as well as July of 2007. All faculty members in the palliative care section are involved in the educational program. Adjunct faculty have also participated in the core didactic series for the fellows as well as on-site training in Pain Management, Geriatric Psychiatry, Neurology, and Hospice.

Description:
Currently the Center for Palliative Care and the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training Program is the recipient of a two year grant through National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization for training of our fellows. This funding has allowed two fellows to complete their training and also pursue various research/academic projects during their training year. The grant also funded travel and educational supplies for the fellows as well as partial funding for the coordinator of the fellowship program. Current funding for this grant extends through June of 2008.
