Faculty Development
Sponsors:
Center for Aging, UAB Sponsoring Schools, John A. Hartford Foundation
Summary:
The Center for Aging supports the career development of UAB faculty through both
informal and formal mechanisms. Senior faculty affiliated with the center serve
as mentors for more junior faculty members seeking career guidance related to research,
education, patient care, and academic leadership. Interactions with senior UAB faculty
and visiting experts in gerontology and geriatric medicine are facilitated through
the weekly scientific seminars, an annual meeting, interdisciplinary scientific
retreats, and through visits by external review groups such as the Center for Aging
external advisory committee.
Formal career development opportunities for faculty members are provided through
mentored experiences offered through the Hartford Foundation-funded Southeast Center
of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine for both clinician educators and researchers.
Individualized career development programs can be developed for faculty from UAB,
other universities, community-based professionals, or health care practitioners.
A graduate certificate is offered through the Gerontology Education Program.
Services:
Training in basic, clinical, patient-oriented, outcomes, social & behavioral, translational,
public policy, and neuroscience research in aging is available through the research
programs of affiliated senior faculty members. Clinical training opportunities in
interdisciplinary geriatric health care are available in variety of health care
settings.
Opportunities for faculty involvement:
Senior faculty members are encouraged to participate as mentors in both informal
and formal programs and to assist in developing additional faculty development programs.
