Research in Applied Gerontology
Description:
As scientific research continues to evolve and the lines between clinical research
and cellular/molecular mechanistic studies have become increasingly blurred, investigators
are encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary research programs embracing the study
of particular diseases/disorders at all levels (a cells to systems approach). The
Center for Aging recently established a program to promote such translational research
on age-related diseases.
The program's objectives include:
- Linking established investigators currently working on divergent ends of the translational
research spectrum (e.g., Ph.D. molecular biologist and clinical trial director)
- Fostering the involvement of young investigators in translational research. This
will be accomplished via a pilot grants program available to postdoctoral fellows
that requires the mentorship of an established investigator conducting research
on the same disease as the fellow but at the other end of the spectrum (e.g. established
Ph.D. biochemist mentoring a fellow in geriatric medicine)
- Translating knowledge gained to the community at large
- Engaging community leaders in support and guidance for the program
Opportunities for Faculty Involvement:
Faculty and postdoctoral fellows with an interest in initiating or participating
in ongoing age-related translational research are encouraged to contact the director.
