Public Policy & Aging Program
Sponsor:
Center for Aging
Purpose:
This program enables research and teaching initiatives in health policy and aging
on the UAB campus, and encourages capacity building in this area.
Services:
The program provides a collaborative forum for research on:
- Insurance coverage for the elderly (e.g. prominence of managed care among the near-elderly
and its implications for their future retirement)
- Long-term care for the elderly (e.g. the link between higher Medicaid reimbursement
rates and nursing home quality)
- Acute care for the elderly (e.g. the role of bypass surgery and angioplasty in reducing
the risk of amputation for elderly with peripheral vascular disease)
Beginning in May 2002, faculty began offering a course in Aging Policy (HCO 680),
which discusses factors that shape public policy affecting the elderly in the U.S.
and other developed countries.
Opportunities for Faculty Involvement:
Faculty are encouraged to inform their students of the new course in aging policy.
Those who are interested in pursuing a research agenda in health policy and aging
are also encouraged to contact a member of this program.
