Sponsors:
The VA
Purpose:
To advance research and clinical application regarding mobility issues in the aging
population. The breadth of research reflects the many facets relating to mobility
in older adults: strength-training interventions, tissue regeneration, cell senescence,
lifespace evaluations, mobility aids, etc.
Services:
The Mobility research unit at the VA GRECC provides the following services:
- The Falls Clinic: This clinic is designed to help older adults avoid falls through
lifespace and other interventions. Cynthia Brown, Ph.D., is the director (read
her article on falls on Agewell.com). Brown conducts research to help formulate
the most effective interventions.
- Research Data: The Mobility Research Unit at the VA compiles all data from its studies
and makes it available to researchers at UAB interested in mobility issues.
- Mobility Assessment: Older adults with mobility issues can come to the unit for
a mobility assessment by VA and UAB researchers.
