Intramural Grants Program

Summary:
The Center for Aging intramural grants program is designed to target the broadest range of scientific disciplines, including but not limited to the biological sciences, clinical sciences, health services delivery, and social and behavioral sciences. It is expected that research supported through this mechanism will lead to the submission of a competitive application to a major research funding agency (e.g., NIH) at the end of the project period. Proposed research is expected to examine a fundamental aspect of the aging process or a major clinical, behavioral, social science, or health policy problem which jeopardizes the health and well-being of a significant segment of the elderly population. The Center is particularly interested in stimulating interdisciplinary research.

Eligibility:
Principal investigators must have primary faculty appointments at UAB at the level of Instructor or higher. Graduate students and post-doctoral trainees may serve as co-investigators. Faculty previously funded by the CFA Intramural Grants Program as Principal Investigators are not eligible. This program may be particularly useful to junior faculty in the early stages of their careers who have an interest in aging, or to senior faculty who are already established in their respective fields, but who now wish to pursue a new aging-related research agenda. Faculty at the rank of Associate Professor or above are asked to include a statement specifically addressing how the proposed research satisfies the eligibility criteria that the proposed research will represent a "new aging-related research agenda."

Funds Available:
An applicant can request up to $20,000 for a one-year project period. Awards cover direct costs only. Two Intramural Grant awards are usually made each year.

Application Review:
Each application meeting program and technical guidelines will be reviewed on the basis of scientific merit by faculty with expertise related to the proposal. Final selection will be made by the Center for Aging Steering Committee after consideration of these reviews and the programmatic relevance of the proposals. Written critiques will be provided.

Application Guidelines:
The Center for Aging requires a Letter of Interest from applicants. Successful applicants will be provided with a full grant application packet. The full process is described in the 2006 CFA Grant Announcement.

Deadline:
Letters of Interest for the FY 2007 program are due by 4:30 pm on Monday, October 2, 2006.
