Pre-Retirement Counseling Sessions
Sponsors:
The UAB Center for Aging
Summary:
These seminars are conducted for the benefit of City of Birmingham employees who
are about to enter into retirement, to prepare them for the mental challenges and
lifestyle changes that typically accompany retirement. The purpose of these sessions
is to help older adults avoid some common pitfalls of retirement, such as decreased
activity, more limited social interaction, and other factors that can lead to depression
and a host of other conditions associated with older adults.
Description:
These sessions are currently conducted by Robert P. Bynum as a public service. Bynum
has led a very active life since retiring from the Social Security Administration
several years ago, serving on the Alabama Commission on Aging, the Alabama Quality
Assurance Foundation, as well as several regional boards. Lectures are given intermittently
whenever the retirement population is large enough to require one.
